Solihull 0-2 Tranmere

Why didn't someone tell me the ground was segregated?! Wondered why I was the only member of the Toilet gang in the first half!

Saying that, the first half kicked-off about 8 minutes late - the officious official of a linesman making a big song and dance about the corner of the goal net. Where do they find them?! That said, the club once again failing to cover itself in glory after the Chester fiasco. Standing in the away end (accidentally), the term tinpot was used on several occasions. And frankly hard to argue.

Aside from that, a goal in each half from the visitors won the game. Ironically Solihull were the better side each time before conceding. Indeed, I was disappointed in Tranmere, although truth be told they probably didn't have to get out of second gear. Solid in defence, and quick on the break, they punished the home side with sift counter attacks. And without the dulcet tones of our Baking Bard to drive the side on, it looked a forlorn hope to take anything from the game.

I don't quite know what to make of the current Moors side. Only seem two home games, however: they play some neat stuff, with Carter pulling most of the strings (Lord help if he gets injured). There are a couple of players who I'm sorry to say don't look up to the grade (I'll not name names), and with every respect, the forwards look like they could play all day without scoring. The most potent weapon seems to be the long throw, which is generally ineffective with such a short front-line (as a bit of a shorta**e myself).

I'd still give it at least another month, maybe two. However, it wouldn't surprise me if the hierarchy were making inquires. Indeed, you could argue it would be a dereliction of duty if they were not...

And who was the bloke in the suit flogging the 50/50? Scrubbing up well Stat!

First time i've seen the moors this season, we seem to have turned into a very hard working team with lots of effort but very little quality in the final third or down the wings as per last season.

Scoring goals and winning matches is going to be a big problem as we don't look like creating anything.

Couldnt go today but from previous games, echo the sentiments about lack of quality on the wing. Where is Jermaine Hylton and Chris Lait?

Did either play today?

We were poor in the final third and produced few real chances.
On a positive note we were not totally outplayed but I never felt we were in with a shout.
Personally I have real doubts about Green at right back and Dapo still looks off the pace.
But I think Tranmere are a better team than their current league listing would indicate.

Re: Solihull 0-2 Tranmere

Few of my thoughts from today and the previous home games/friendlys.

Solihull were set up to not concede in the first half with 5 at the back, 4 central midfielders and Dunkley up top by himself. We offered nothing going forward but Tranmere didn't really threaten either. We conceded from a counter attack after a failed Tonks long throw but I'll get to that later.

Dapo and Campbell came on in the second half and we switched to a 4-3-3 which provided our best attacking moments but still nothing to really trouble Tranmere. During this spell Campbell was playing stapled to the touchline and looked dangerous. This only lasted for 20mins and then we brought on another fullback and switched to some strange asymmetrical formation with Campbell on his off wing that didn't really offer anything going forward and Tranmere scored from another counter attack. Tranmere could have had 3 or 4 if they tried.

Really don't like the long throws. They're innacurate too slow and loop too high in the air to be a real threat. Add the fact that we aren't very good in the air and I don't really see why we bother.

Don't understand why we made our pitch narrower if we're going to play formations where we look to exploit width. Hopefully it wasn't because of Tonks long throws because that would be moronic.

Also for me Carter really isn't that good. He's big and physical but that's about it. His passing isn't accurate, he constantly doesn't clear the first man at set pieces and is very slow.

Our players don't seem suited to our current tactical setup. Liburd as left wing back is beyond useless. He cannot use his left for and is constantly forced to go inside making him very easy to defend against. Dunkley and Dapo play a similar style (with Dunkley being noticeably worse) that isn't suited to long balls or throws which we were constantly using today. Midfield is very uncreative with the only standout being Carter spraying balls into the stand.

On the plus's side the defence (apart from Liburd) looks ok and hopefully when some of our more creative players are fit we can play the way Liam wants to.

At the moment we look like crystal palace. A manager shoe horning players into a formation and system they aren't suited to.

Why the team selection today? In particular why did we start with decent players on the subs. bench. In my opinion Moors only came vaguely dangerous after they eventually got on to the pitch.

And the eight minute delay in getting the match underway, because of the state of the net, greatly embarrassing, and not sometime I have ever seen before, anywhere.

Whilst you may be right about a couple of players not being up to the grade, I have to disagree about Carter.

I know this may be regarded as heresy by some, but having seen all six games so far I don't think its unfair to say that Carter has only looked interested during the second half of the Barrow game. He is OK at playing balls square to teammates but forward balls either go into space with no-one anywhere near, or just straight to the opposition. Today he had a half chance (which was maybe the Moors beat chance) which went sailing way over the bar. Free-kicks often didn't get over the first defender and were usually wasted. And he got booked for a needless foul.

Probably tired from Torquay. I'd imagine that's why we set up to not concede in the first half knowing we'd only manage about half an hour from Dapo and Campbell

I don't buy that too tired rubbish especially as it was pointed out by someone that Campbell comes from a pro club so should be fit enough.
I was also confused by the substitution of Tonks whose throws we're our most potent way to actually get into their penalty area. Edwards had a really poor game but was left on until the dying moments.
I thought Rovers were distinctly average compared to last season but after giving away the first goal through another defensive lapse and with no cutting edge up front we were never going to get anything from the game.

I can believe they're too tired. Torquay was only on Saturday, it's a long coach ride and we had to play in 25 degree heat today. The teams only semi pro, Premiership teams with the beat facilities in football have been known to complain when they play 2 games in a week.

Tonks was terrible nearly all his throws lead to counters for Tranmere and his passing in midfield was dreadful.
