Moors 2 - Harrogate 0
Rare post from me in the absence of Martyr’s usual intelligent musings (oh I mean bewildering wittering on of course)
Moors started much the brighter team attacking with purpose and power, ably supported by the endeavour and creativity of the defence and midfield respectively. It was no surprise therefore when we had the ball in the net from the deftest of headers only to yet again be denied by the referee’s assistant on the far side flagging for offside. At this point most of the (somewhat depleted) toilet gang thought “here we go again” another nil all draw etc etc. Fair play to the team though for persevering and to Gudger in particular for losing his marker and scoring with a thumping header from a well worked corner. We closed out the half with no problems but a 2-0 score line at half time wouldn’t have flattered the hosts.
Harrogate huffed and puffed for the early part of the second half but Boot between the sticks managed to deal with the rare threat they had on goal. It wasn’t surprising that the Moors manager subbed the front 3 in fairly quick succession mid way though the second half as they had worked their socks off all night and constantly threatened. Yussuf nearly made an instant impression by swivelling ant turning on a sixpence in the box but it looked like he tried to place his shot right in the corner so it came back off the post with the keeper in no man’s land. The visitors definitely had the rub of the green with the official’s decisions all evening so when Osborne was tripped in the box for what looked like the clearest of penalties with 5 to go was baffled why the referee took an age to give it. Yussuf stepped up and looked unconvincing yet again (what is it with us and penalty takers?) thought keeper had made a comfortable save getting his body right behind it; the relief around Damson Park was palpable when it went over Belshaw and bounced in
Overall Moors thoroughly outplayed a Harrogate team that will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season (largely due to the size of their playing budget) After 10 minutes I commented to a few regulars that we really looked up for it last night, coupled with a slight change in formation/personnel and we were simply too good for the visitors in every department. Sure they’ll argue they had an off night (and most teams do at some point) but listening to their manager afterwards he accepted that there was only ever going to be one winner.
Gudger was deserving of MoM but genuinely one of half a dozen players could have won it too, Wright, Hylton, Stenson up top looked awesome at times and with Carter and especially Obsorne pulling the strings in midfield. The defence looks so solid due to their effort , commitment and willingness to cover when others are caught out of position it looks like their all enjoying playing at the moment, and we’re enjoying watching (when Martyr’s not there) long may it continue

Agree about Yussuf pen. Never been a great fan of the stuttering run-up style he employs, as it very often gives keepers just enough additional time to dive the right way, as was proved last night.

Yussuf's penalty placement is poor but he always seems to get the keepers with power.
