The stewarding yesterday

Seriously, what the hell was all that about yesterday?

First we were told that we couldn't stand on Toilet Terrace so we complied and moved. We were then told that we couldn't stand at the front and needed to stand five yards back because we were blocking the view of others sitting down, again we complied. Then a steward informed us that we could stand at the front so we did. By this time, a crowd of people were stood on Toilet Terrace (where we were not allowed to). Another steward comes trotting over to tell us we have to move five yards back again and says he's going to move everybody back on that side so we'll all be able to see, again we comply but nobody to the right of us actually moves so now we cannot see the match, by this time a big argument has ensued and Toilet Terrace has been cleared.

After 45 minutes of officious stewarding that has really done nothing more than create confusion and ill feeling, I was somewhat surprised to see Fylde fans entering the pitch at the end of the game. I can only assume that blocking the view for a small part of the pitch for a couple of supporters takes priority over pitch invasions which is a tad confusing.

I have sympathy with stewards and always try to engage politely, they have a difficult job and it's not in my nature to make it any harder for them but that yesterday was far from good enough.

Obviously we want to make the match experience as good as it can be for all but let's try and remember that we're at a football match and not the opera. If your view is restricted then logic tells me you probably haven't attended many matches before (otherwise you'd be sat/stood somewhere else) so I don't see why longstanding supporters (pun intended) should have to cater for that.

Didn't spoil the day of course (the result did that) and I look forward to seeing all three and a half thousand of you at the resumption of the new season.

Statto has put a complaint in regarding the pitch invasion about the stewarding. I agree it was an absolute disgrace. I have full faith in the club that they will deal with this but will the fa get involved regarding the pitch invasion with a fine? If they do the stewards should pay it.

!@#$. Its as simple as that. I've said it before if it carries on I will stop coming to home games full stop. And just do the away games.

I'm slightly ambivalent regarding pitch invasions - I've been on the pitch myself in the past when we've won a cup or league, as have many others I know - it depends pretty much on the atmosphere. Surely, if there is aggression there should be a clampdown but if it's just happy to have won, I see no problem and I'm convinced that had the boot been on the other foot we would have seen an invasion from our own. I thought the stewards did well to corral the invaders who moved back to their corner fairly amicably from what I could see, admittedly from the other end. No flares, no violence, job done.

As an afterthought I was concerned at the lack of checking on tickets for the standing area, particularly behind the goal in blocks S and T as at half time there was a definite increase in the numbers there who seemed to have moved en mass from the Drain End. If you are going to delineate a standing area for a specific number of tickets, then you owe it to those people who have bought tickets for those areas that it does need to be policed, something that has not happened at any game this season, in my experience.

Re: The stewarding yesterday

I can understand why the decision was made not to allow people to stand in certain places yesterday, as the local council are obviously paying close attention to what we're doing at the moment. As I said to the first steward who politely moved us on, I know they're just doing what they've been told and don't want to unnecessarily make their lives difficult. It's the inconsistency and the attitude of some of the stewards - who seem like they're looking for confrontation - that sticks in the craw.

The way they got the heavies in to move supporters from in front of an out-of-order toilet (so what were they obstructing?) yesterday was frankly embarrassing. Where were those troll-men when Fylde fans were climbing the barriers?

Then the attitude of the stewards in dealing with some naturally irate supporters, considering they were being told a different thing every two minutes and distracted from watching the game, was abysmal. One young steward was at one stage squaring up to an old bloke to remonstrate about how 'you don't tell me how to do my job'. The older bald guy with one of the more senior roles responded to people complaining that they'd been moved from places where they'd stood for over ten years with: 'you've not been here twelve years'. Such an unnecessary comment, especially considering he's a representative of the club - and was essentially showing contempt for longstanding supporters. I thought they were meant to be there to calm the situation, not escalate it?

All of this over a set of steps that won't exist come the start of next season. The presence of supporters on those steps was mentioned as a fun non-league novelty by the BBC in their coverage of the Blackpool game. Many of those people have been assets to the club for many years. Regulars aren't asking to be given priority treatment - just to be able to do what they've done week in, week out for seasons and seasons. We were badly let down by the way that area of the ground was managed yesterday, for what was probably the biggest game in our club's history. All that does is alienate people who love the club.

From what I observed over by Block Q yesterday one of the main qualities of the stewards is the ability to stand with a smirk on your face whilst having your hands in your pockets. There are several hard working and sensible regular stewards who act in a very professional way but sitting on the stairway throughout the whole second half is an obstruction and poor practice.

What I observed also in Block Q was two stewards leaning against the rail watching the match in is entirety other than when the female 'supervisor' patrolled and at half time. May have to be a steward next season being paid to watch the game whilst standing in a prime position is rather appealing.

The stewards were stood for the most part against the pitch rail obstructing the view for those in lower couple of rows, surely they should be provided small plastic seats like the ball boys to sit and face the crowd that they're employed to look after and assist.

It's all a learning curve I guess, those in charge Saturday obviously lacked the experience to get it right.

Greetings from Nessebar!

Can only but agree with the fiasco. The genuine, regular Moors stewards looked equally embarrassed by the over the top authoritarian state regime imposed on Saturday. Blimey, it was like C####n wuz in power!

A number of us hsve frequented that area for years. Back in the day, my lads used to plsy football in the ares - just ask real club stars like the now retired Danny.

Dully accept progress, however a little courtesy goes a long way. I've met s number of folk around the toilets (!) who are now good pals. And Roj! Its the nearest to Merthyrs W**k Bank in England!

The club has survived on crowds of 200-odd, when you virtually knew everyone by name. Its great to see it come on leeps and bounds. However, progress doesn't have to alienate long suffering old fogey gits like the Toilet Gang!
