Back in my pre retirement days they kept revising our contracts because they wanted to tie us down and make sure we had something to hit us with during appraisal. The thiing that I objected to was a list of duties and then the last was "Do any other duties that it was reasonable to be asked to perform". If they are reasonable list them above.
So if he is employed as a footballer would it be reasonable to ask him to do duties as a groundsman, for example. I have my Union Rep hat on here and I think he has every right to say no.
You'd have to ask Martyr about losing a 20% chunk out of a high salary.
On the other hand the club could have laid him off or made him redundant instead of paying him 80% of his wages for doing nothing.
I don't think the club could have made him redundant, regardless of the rights or wrongs of what he subsequently did.
Surely if Rog is comparing to a normal workplace then if it saved the club going under they could make anyone redundant?

Re: The Unacceptable Face of Football?
I was required to defend people who were out on a sicknote for 6 months due to "stress", who were not setting work whilst absent. I didn't think this was right but I was obliged to do it. Seems we have a similar situation here, the training being equivalent to tyhe wiork setting. OK different industries but I will usually side with the employeee rather than the employer.

Re: The Unacceptable Face of Football?
Rog, I respect that as I do your opinion, however I think we’ll disagree on this one.
The bloke was still getting over £3k a month for doing nothing and the potential of c£1600 if he wanted to work for the chairman’s company, yet he still declined the offer as it wouldn’t cover his financial commitments 😳 He also got £20k for signing from kiddy a couple of years ago (apparently 🤷♂️🤷♂️)
Imo the bloke is clearly taking the piss, can’t live on £3k a week?? Give your head a wobble ffs

Re: The Unacceptable Face of Football?
I think you're both right. The employee has every right to insist on his full pay and to not work in another role than that which he is contracted to.
However: my opinion is that in the unique circumstances of the current situation the player is being a twat par excellence in not accepting a pay cut that everyone else had accepted and being a double twat par excellence in not taking advantage of the offer of alternative work for the chairman's company, effectively the chairman engineering a job for him to boost his earnings back to their contractual level. One wonders what his team mates think about his loyalty, if not to the club, his loyalty to them and I wonder if any of them had a similar offer from the chairman.
Incidentally, the newspaper article also appears to have been removed.

Re: The Unacceptable Face of Football?
Ah, now I did not say he wasn't a twat. In a similar way the French Teacher who had 6 months off with "stress", which was being a mother and havng a partner who had formerly been a villa player would do whilst having a full time job, so returned for a week when she was about to go onto half pay and then started another 6 months sickness almost immediately. Covering for her classes and her department setting the lessons did not demonstrate her teamwork. Lovely french accent though being from Dijon.
I didn't represent her during her dismissal hearings, kicked that one upstairs to Union Office.

Perhaps the player's issue is not purely fiscal....

Now signed for Stockport County, they’ve made some moves so far this season.
Interesting to note all the articles have been removed, maybe there’s more than meets the eye🤷♂️🤷♂️

I presume solicitors have been involved in the removal of both articles.
