Strikers

Does anyone know the background to Danny Wright leaving the club?
At the moment, swapping him for Rooney is not looking like a great move, in my opinion.

God knows.

Maybe he had a better offer. Maybe he has family living that way.

Re: Strikers

My assumption is that we didn't renew his contract as he's 35 and Shan doesn't want target men.

Wrighty was great for us playing within the system Flowers preferred, but honestly I don't think he'd be banging them in playing our current system.

Also, given our current goalscoring form, I don't think we need to complain at all. Rooney has scored but got injured. Ward scored but got injured. Archer has been excellent. Sbarra has been on fire and shouldn't be playing anywhere near this division. Osborne has goals. I like Wright a lot, but we're not missing him in that regard.

Hudlin is a weird one, mind, and I'm tempted to put money on him not scoring for us this season. I can see him going on loan to a side in the North/South or the regional premier leagues and scoring a few, but I'm not convinced at all that he's ready for this level yet.

Donowa needs time and hasn't really had it yet. He's at least a proven goalscorer for the top of the National North.

Wright was out if contract and I believe not offered an extension. I also believe that was the wrong decision, he's banging in goals for fun at Torquay and I think, under our system he could be doing so for us as he's not just a target man, indeed I think his game suffered under Tim but his work rate was outstanding and that is a prerequisite in this league. Remember Tim also played McCallum as a target man, to little avail, and when he went to Barnet he also scored for fun.

Agree with all of this. I think Wright's age was the main thing against him being offered a new contract. Given that we'd signed Rooney who is no spring chicken, the management probably wanted to balance the squad in terms of age/experience. I also think that his style suited the more direct style of play under Flowers, than the patient build up, short passing, possession-based style of Shan. That said, I think he's a super player and a role model (my 6 year old had "19 Wright" on the back of his Moors shirt last season) so I'm pleased for him that he found another club and is enjoying success with them.

I agree that Hudlin looks some way short of the standard required at National League level, which is unsurprising given the leap he's made from the amateur game. In any other circumstances, he probably wouldn't have started a game for Moors yet, it's a situation that has been forced due to lack of depth in the forward department and the injuries to Rooney, Ward and (I assume) Archer. Hopefully he'll come good in the long run, benefiting from some time on loan at a suitable level to aid his development.

Re: Strikers

Apparently the reason for Archer’s non-appearance in recent matches was that he was isolating due to COVID, I have no idea however if that was directly related to the latest x3 match postponements?
Either way despite our good goal scoring record so far this season, I just can’t shake off the gut feeling that with both Rooney and Ward being so injury-prone, Archer unlikely to stick around for too much longer and Hudlin being so inexperienced at this level the goals are going to all but dry up. Yes, Sbarra and Osborne are both top quality players who contribute goals, but neither of them are out and out goalscorers. Answers on a postcard!

Re: Strikers

Sbarra is absolutely lethal at this level being deployed in his current position. The attacking midfielders are our biggest goal threat in this formation.

A ridiculously prolific forward would be lovely, but the intelligence, strength, and movement that Rooney and Archer have shown are a huge part of why we've scored goals and won games. I honestly don't get the anxiety behind this thread at all. We're averaging two goals per game so far and have played some really tough teams -- two of the three favourites for the title race.

As for looking to the future, would Danny Wright have given us more than one more season that we'll get out of the Archer loan anyway? Might we have declined to renew his contract because he was after two years? We don't know. There's no use in bemoaning it now when we're doing perfectly well as it is.

Original loan agreement is until January and will then be looked again by all parties to see if an extension is required.
