Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
The board seem to be setting up the business plan as 'buy low, sell high'. If they can't get the basics right in order to secure transfer fees, how is that business plan meant to work out?
Granted, no confirmation from our own side (yet), but it's hard to speculate as to what the best-case scenario is in this circumstance. A badly-written clause perhaps?

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
Unfortunately not a surprise at all (on either count). Very best wishes to Omari. Cant blame him for leaving.
Whos next i wonder. Surprised if we have anyone other than Liam D with over 12 months service now.
Trying my best to look forward to the new season but very little to get excited about.
Second season in a new league is always notoriously difficult and we should be investing in experience, not taking a punt on loads of cheap unproven players on the off chance that we can make a few quid if one of them comes off..
F's me off because with all the potential here looks like we are going full throttle in reverse.
Club really need to take care. Unless we get a good start to the season there could be some very low attendances this season and an obvious outcome.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
So, with Mansfield Town claiming that we made an administration error I have been in touch with the club to find out what the hell is going on and to find out what the administration error was.
In fairness, we have not made an error. The following is from a Senior Official at the club:
A new deal for 17/18 was discussed verbally with Omari prior to end of season 16/17 but player expressed a desire to play full time league football so no deal was reached and his contract ran to it's natural conclusion.
There was no option on the contract as the player would not sign one when he originally joined us on a one year deal in 2016, so there was no transfer fee due as he was a free agent at end of season 16/17.
Due to his age we could possibly have been entitled to compensation but as Omari had only been with us for one season and he had formally played at a higher level, proving that we had invested extensive time and money in developing him (which is the criteria any compensation claim is based on under FA rules) this would have meant a lot of potentially costly (as a tribunal fee has to be paid by both the former and new clubs before the tribunal is held) and time consuming hassle for both clubs and the player himself for what would ultimately result in a nominal if any, compensation fee being due to SMFC so in the interests of all parties this course of action was not taken and we thank him and wish him well.
Once Omari made he clear he did not want to stay for another season and no deal could be reached we focused our attentions on other targets to replace him.
= = = = = = = = = =
I hope that the above clears matters.

I also meant to say good luck to Omari for the rest of his career and thanks for the memories. You left us with many.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
He was a really good flair player, great find by Marcus, we will certainly miss his creativity and free kicks.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
That's actually completely fair. Can understand Omari's decision as well. He deserves to be playing full-time football.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
Nice of Mansfield to make up a completely bullshit story, by the way. Reflects well on them.
I've heard tell from a couple of sources that a few more signings could be on the way this week. Hopefully positive news to come.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
A difficult but understandable decision made by the club.
I think it's was a bit unfair of Steve Evans to publicly say it was admin error, even if that was his understanding of the situation. But we are talking about Steve Evans...
All the best to Omari, a deserved move for him.

Re: Sterling James joins Mansfield
Thanks for clearing that up Statto - I couldn't work out how we had made an error as he only signed a contract for 16-17 and he said on Twitter he hadn't signed for 17-18 so unless we could have put some sort of option when he signed the contract, it's just football. We got him for free so can't really expect a fee. Sounds like Mansfield and Evans trying to sound smug about getting him for free but surely that is the norm in non league.
