Interview with Bob

The Blue Square North website (news section) has an interview with Bob Faulkner. I haven't been able to give it a listen as my system at work blocks certain sites. An interview with Bob violates company policy!

I'd watch it Keith as I'm guessing Ozzy has some pretty decent lawyers.

Two new books coming out next week by Ozzy & Bob

Ozzy's :- ' How to ride a Quad Bike '

Bobs :- ' How to be a Football Scout '

I think I'll give them a miss then.

I disagree with Bob's comment about the regionality of the league. If he didn't want to have to travel to the far north when Moor Green were promoted into the new Blue Square North then he should have either persuaded the board not to accept promotion or moved to a club at a more regional level like Sutton Coldfield or Bedworth.

I do not think it was up to Moor Green should they accept promotion or not, however, if it was, if Moor Green had stayed in the Southern League Premier would they not have gone for promotion the following season ?

I am double guessing here, but maybe Bob is saying that there should be three divisions (as back in 2004) below Conference Premier rather than just two divisions as it is now.

As much as I like going to Workingotn, it is weird trying to find a radio station to get the full time results and the two local radio stations are Scottish and Irish (RTE).

Re: Interview with Bob

I'm with Statto and, I think, Bob. A more regionalised set of divisions would actually suit everyone better as I can't see Blyth relishing travelling to Cirencester any more than Workington would relish the journey either or Gloucester doing the return journeys. We all know Worcester are north of Gloucester but they couldn't be reinstated into the northern section as the league had agreed to a minimum term in the southern section (all to do with retaining players from within striking distance of the club). Will they put Newport County into the northern section if they get promotion, I think not, denying both themselves and Gloucester a relatively 'local' derby.

I admit that I don't understand the idea of wanting to play in a lower league other than for non-footballing reasons. What's the point? Surely all clubs, players and their supporters want to pit themselves against the best available - I want to watch Villa play in the Champions League.

If finance is the problem, it should have been considered when the Ryman, Unibond and Southern leagues were amalgamated and, especially in these straightened times, a way of returning to a more regionalised league structure should have been an open option. My guess is that sponsors drove the final decisions on the structure.

What a looooooooooong strange trip it's been

Re: Interview with Bob

I think it was partially a push for higher 'standards' as well, with two regional leagues carrying fewer smaller clubs than a system of three, and three rather than six at the level below, etc.

The fact of the matter is - and this is the bit that I disagree with Bob's criticism of the regionality of this league about - if you want to play in the higher echelons of the pyramid, you have to accept that as a club you must cover more ground to and from away games. Rather than taking the attitude of 'someone with a bit of common sense ought to look at this', why not say 'as a smaller club this is not ideal for us, but we want to be successful so we will make the most of it'.

I can empathise with the long distances, I've travelled to all of the extreme outposts in this division - Workington, Blyth, Fleetwood, Gainsborough, Farsley - but if players and coaches don't want to travel them then they should stick to a lower, more regional division and give someone else a go. This is the last level before the 'big time' of national leagues and is only really regional in the most loose of senses. I think we should be pleased that a club of our stature has the chance to play at such a level rather than bemoaning travelling long distances to do so.

Personally I think the leagues should regionalise much further up the pyramid, with a League Two N/S, then a Conference N/S before reverting to the Northern Prem/Southern/Isthmian system. Since that isn't a reality, though, I feel Bob's comments about the league are counterproductive and lacking in ambition.
