Re: Gateshead!
quote: Because I followed Birmingham Bullets for many years and Nick Nurse was our most successful coach, I watched one of the playoff finals matches this week. He is now Head Coach of Toronto Raptors; he has done really well.
I also supported Birmingham Bullets during those years. Nick Nurse was there 1995-1997.
And I did not know he had done so well for himself. Congratulations to Nick. It is looking good for the Toronto Raptors. They need just one more win to win the 2019 NBA Finals match against the Golden State Warriors. Next match tomorrow, Monday, in Toronto.

Re: Gateshead!
I am a strong advocate of VAR, except for the way it is used for offsides so tight they can neither be detected by human officials nor make any appreciable difference to the play. Jesse Lingard being penalised for having his toes offside on Thursday, and the Italian forward played on by the full back only to find her forehead was offside earlier today (of course, in a 40-yard move in which the ball was not once in the air).
VAR is sold as being there to right obvious errors, not to force microscopic offside calls that are impossible for human officials to give. If that's the most desirable case, we may as well replace the assistants with robots firing lasers across the defensive line. Any hair offside and the referee gets a buzz to give a free kick.

Re: Gateshead!
Personally think it should only be used to correct completely obvious mistakes, such as Henry's handball against Ireland and the 'hand of god'. And other decisions when the 'VAR Referee' can undoubtedly and immediately tell the referee that a mistake has been made. Referees shouldn't be having to go to the side of the pitch and watch the replay over and over again in different angles.

Re: Gateshead!
I'm struggling to see how VAR - or the lack of it - is a factor in Gateshead's travails.

My sketchbook used to have the motto "The most boring distance between two points is a straight line".
