Consensus from National League clubs is to complete season

Yeovil Town chairman and co-owner Scott Priestnall has said that the consensus from National League clubs is to complete the current season, with the continuing uncertainty surrounding the football shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking in an update to supporters yesterday, Priestnall addressed the email statement from National League CEO Michael Tattersall to clubs that had been circulated, in which it was said: “The broad consensus was that our clubs wish for a decision to be made to close the season as soon as possible.”

Priestnall explained: “I think it’s been leaked today, but it doesn’t read the way that it’s intended. What has happened is the National League have now officially asked The FA to postpone all remaining league fixtures.

“Obviously there’s no chance of us playing football before the 24th of April, but having spoken to the league today and a number of clubs over the last few days, there is a consensus to get the league completed, whenever that might be and when we can actually start to play football again. I think our lead will be taken on what happens with the Premier League and the EFL, but I certainly believe if those guys complete their seasons there’s a very good chance we’ll complete our season as well, which is vitally important for a club like ours.

“Well, it’s vital for any club, but especially being relegated from the EFL it has such financial implications to us, not just from a straightforward funding point of view, but also for projects like our academy.”

Darren Sarll’s Yeovil are currently 4th in the table, having played 37 of their 46 fixtures.

Notts County’s board of directors have issued a message to supporters following the media’s publication of a National League statement to clubs, the content of which suggests the league’s intention is to close the 2019/20 season as soon as possible.

The statement from Notts, who are 3rd in the Vanarama National League at present, reads:

We appreciate that today’s media coverage has caused a great deal of confusion and concern to our fans who are very keen to see us complete our season. Naturally, we share their desire to continue our push for at least a play-off position and a place in the Buildbase FA Trophy final.

While we have yet to be officially consulted by the National League, we’d like to assure our supporters that we have already strongly stated our case for all remaining fixtures to be played so that promotion and relegation matters can come to a natural conclusion.

It’s our firm belief that a dynamic approach needs to be taken in order to preserve the integrity of both the National League and the FA Trophy and we have shared several ideas with the league, the EFL and the FA on how we feel this can be achieved.

FC Halifax Town boss Pete Wild insists no final decision has been made over whether the National League season will be scrapped.

In a statement sent out to all member clubs, the league’s chief executive Michael Tattersall said the FA had been asked to assist them with “making the decisions to officially postpone all remaining National League fixtures and to end the season as soon as possible”.

Tattersall also said that “the broad consensus was that our clubs wish for a decision to be made to close the season as soon as possible”.

But there has been no official confirmation that the season has been made null and void as yet.

“The club’s been asked to give their thoughts on the situation but there’s no decision on what is going to happen,” said Wild, who is still holding out hope that the season will resume at some point.

“There’s basically three scenarios on the table – start it when it’s ready to do so, take a point per game average over the 46 games and play the play-offs when we can, or scrap it.”

IMO, the fairest way forward would be to complete this season next season.
They could fill the empty weekends next year with maybe some additional two legged cup competitions (Corona cup) or local derbies.
You could for one season have an additional mini local league.
That would mean us playing the likes of Telford, kiddy, leamington and Tamworth. That would be a Money spinner.
Anyone any thoughts on that.

With most clubs having only 9 or less games to play, the league could be completed in four weeks, then have a two or three week break, followed by next season which could see all cup competitions' games being played over 90 minutes followed by penalties if the outcome is a draw.

I think the local leagues would only add to the confusion, get this one done then move on to next season.
