Tactical Discussion - Guide to Survival

So.. Another loss yesterday that leaves us hanging over the drop zone, we lost our captain marvel for the rest of the season and currently have a defensive crisis going on at the worst time possible. Yesterdays second half was promising but I've been pondering since yesterday about how we should line up for the next 3 games.

The Reg Dennis Preferred Formation

Image

Ideally i don't like playing with 3 at the back but in current circumstances and with the players available this is probably the best bet imo. Our best players are attacking based and we need to score goals and win games. The weakness of this formation comes from flanks, Macclesfield especially have pace on the flanks. If Carline and Omari switch off then we are gonna be exposed, if they can concentrate and track back when necessary then this gives us a good chance.

Pros
- Packed midfield
- 2 strikers
- No room for Sanusi

Liam Macdonald's Likely Lineup

Image

I dont really agree with this formation but i expect us to lineup like this on Monday, Problem with this is we don't have the creativity of Sammons in the middle but Liam always prefers to play Maye. I hate the idea of having Nortey anywhere near defence after the nightmare in Birkenhead last week but i think he would do less damage at centre half than he can at full back. This ideally should be more capable of dealing with the wingers etc but may leave us overrun in midfield.

Pros
- Nortey better than Sanusi
- Nortey not at fullback
- No Sanusi
- Full backs in natural positions

Attacking Formation

Image

Not sure how this one would work but its attacking and has our strongest frontline on the field. Yesterday Brown and White worked there socks off so neither of them could be subbed however we also need Dapo on the field. This would allow us to play with all of the strikers but would again leave us exposed to attacks down the flank.

Pros
- All 3 forwards on the field
- Brown available to hold the ball up

So what do you guys think? Hopefully we can give Liam and the coaching staff some ideas to work on. Another option is to loan a defender in emergency, what about Jordi Gough?? He isn't playing at Brackley and clearly still loves the Moors. At least we know we would get 100% from him!

Good detailed ideas. If we can get Gough on loan the. It's a definite yes from me, but I think the window is very much shut.

Your preferred line up seems very attacking so I would be a little tentive about adopting it. But we looked a lot better when we played balls out attacking yesterday.

I fully agree with your sentiments about looking weaker at the back and it's a worry. I would go for a formation I put on another thread.
4 3 2 1
Baxter
Nortey Green Kettle Franklin
      Maye, Sammons, Byrne
          Sterling. carline
           Dapo

We can bring on Charles-Cook for more pace and skill in place of Byrne if needed and drop Carline further back and even bring on White for whatever needed if we need a goal in the last 20 minutes.

I think Maye is a ball winner too similar to Byrne, i guess they could sit back and allow the front players and Sammons to create chances

Reg Dennis:

This is the best thread I face seen on this forum , to date.

Well done , for all your hard work.

Regarding Liam McDonald and supporters helping him on his Managerial learning curve:

I think the paying supporters / SMSA should have more of a say on tactics, for each individual match.

Perhaps a text message service , to pass on tactical suggestions, from the paying supporters, to Liam via a 3rd Party.

Liam / Coaching staff cannot always see , from their position , along the side of pitch , our strengths / weaknesses.

Maye is here this season and next so get used to him, he's a holding midfielder best playing in front of the back four.
Andy Brown has to start every game for me with Harry White alongside, Nortey at right back in a back four along with green, kettle and franklin. Sterling wide right for me in a 4-4-2

Let's not even bother with a manager at all - select the entire team by telephone poll.

Training can be led by the winner of the 50-50 draw.

Didn't some team in the US try this at some point? I can't imagine it lasted long.

Interesting that Regan doesn't figure in any of the squads

If we play 3 at the back against Macc we will get torn apart, you can't trust Carline and Sterling to track back all game. they will run out of steam too fast.
