Happy new year to all. Only caught the 2nd half and if nothing else we showed good character to turn around a deficit. Had Asante's effort gone in rather than smash the goalframe it would've ranked as the best goal I've seen scored against us, as it was we caught a wee break. I find Hudlin's attitude brilliant, Jamie could learn a lot from his reaction to being fouled, rather than collecting bookings like Panini stickers. The keeper made a meal of the winner but Kyle earned that bit of fortune.

Agree with others who don't like rotation on this scale. Given the staccato nature of this season with postponements every 5 minutes, there must be first-choice players who are going a fortnight without any meaningful involvement even when fit. We're not Leeds and Shan is not Bielsa, his system is not effective enough to be immune to personnel changes.

I'm not sure who, Boot aside, has been anywhere near ever-present - apologies for being too lazy to check - but it can't be doing much for a player's mindset to not know if they're a fixture in the team from one week to the next?

Last night was league match number 13. Top appearance makers in the league for us so far:
Boot - 13 starts
Williams - 13 starts
Cranston - 12 starts
Gleeson - 11 starts
Storer - 10 starts

In total we have played 17 games this season and had 17 different starting line ups.

A game of two halves yesterday. First half we looked dreadful and deservedly went in behind. We had plenty of possession but made very few chances. Chesterfield weren't much better and it was a scrappy game to watch. As others have said, we looked like 11 individuals, rather than a team, with so many wayward passes, balls played into space with nobody running on to them. We also need to improve on set pieces, both defending and attacking.

Second half we looked much more lively and once we got the equaliser, it felt like we would go on to win it - although Asante's superb effort would have been worthy to win any game had it gone in.

Hudlin gets better with every game, although I feel he gets bullied off the ball more than he should, given his size. He took his goal very well, although the Chesterfield keeper has to feel disappointed he didn't keep that one out.

It was good to see Maycock paired with Storer, rather than the Storer-Gleeson pairing. Maycock shows a lot more endeavour and adventure linking defence and attack, which is what has been lacking in that area of the pitch.

Donowa hasn't won me over yet. He looks like a Liam MacDonald signing, although he hasn't had much playing time to make an impression. I'd have preferred to see Ball start in that advanced midfield position. He's not the most exciting player but has a knack of being in the right place at the right time to make things happen.

We still did too much dithering around at the back trying to play pretty football. There was one passage in the second half when a goal kick was played out to Carter adjacent to the penalty area, it was then played back to a couple of other deep Moors players before being played back to Carter under pressure near the corner flag who then sliced it out of play for a Chesterfield throw-in midway inside our half. That left me screaming at the telly. If Boot had taken the goal kick and hoofed it straight out of play, it probably would have given us better field position!

That said, a win is a win. You win matches by putting the ball in the opponent's net more times than they put it in ours, not by having the most possession or most shots or hitting the woodwork the most times. Last night's game was effectively 3-1 to Moors, because there was absolutely nothing wrong with the goal Storer scored from the corner. The ref disallowed it based on the reactions of the Chesterfield players, but in reality, the keeper flapped at the corner and made a mess of it. They did the same thing for Sbarra's goal - they all put their arms up for offside, including the defender who was stood on the Chesterfield goal line!

To echo what others have said, Hudlin has done tremendously well this season.
He was obviously brought in as "one for the future", but circumstances have led to him getting a chance. Boy has he grabbed it with both hands!
it's not just his goals, but his all round application, attitude and effort.

If you read this son...keep up the good work!

The only place in which I'd disagree with Bolda is on Donawa. He put in a good performance last night and was integral in both our goals. I felt he offered more in that position than Jamey Osborne has in recent games.

People might point fingers at the Chesterfield goalkeeper for the winner, but the reason he was scrambling and flapping was because Hudlin's header was placed so excellently. Low into the corner. Any goalkeeper or defender is going to struggle to get to that.

I think the goal from the corner was ruled out for a foul by Cameron on the goalkeeper. It was inconsistent with the refereeing throughout the game, but I don't think we could argue it was unfair even if the game had been a draw. I felt the mass of Chesterfield bodies around the goalkeeper was most at fault for him not getting near the ball, but Cameron was in there colliding with them and they both hit the deck, and in fairness the whistle was blown before the header went in.

That's fair enough, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on Donowa given his limited time on the pitch.

A couple of other observations from last night...

Coxe's form seems to have dropped off in the last few games including last night. He seems less of a threat going forward than he was earlier in the season. Cranston saw a lot more of the ball on his side of the pitch, but even he looked a bit lethargic at times.

Nathan Cameron seemed to slot in and had an ok game, given his recent arrival.

It feels like we offer very little threat from set pieces this season, compared to recent seasons. When we had Howe, Gudger and Daly piling into the box for free kicks and corners, it always felt like something would happen. The floated ball to the far post for Daly to head back across goal was a potent set piece. This season, free kicks and corners don't seem to carry as much threat. The delivery has often been poor, but we also don't seem to attack the ball as strongly. I can't think of many goals we've scored from corners this season - Pearce's in the Morecambe game springs to mind (plus Storer's "goal" last night!) We might as well take short corners and play the pretty stuff around their box, rather than try crossing it and fail to beat the first man.

I thought Donawa looked lively last night and offered us something a bit different linking up with Hudlin further up the pitch, he certainly put a shift in.

Cranston’s delivery from the left was poor even though he was getting into good positions, he needs to whip the ball in quicker and not let the defender close him down or block the cross.

Coxe had probably his poorest game for us so far, but might have been short of match sharpness having not started for three weeks.

I think Cranston looked isolated and missed the overlapping runs from Mitch Hancox.

The Chesterfield manager was having a gripe about having to play back to back three days apart and how unfair it was after their isolation. He mentioned shenanigans but wouldn’t say whether they were of the Moors or leagues making.
Personally in the present situation I think he should suck it up, all teams will have to compromise at some stage if we want to get through this season.

Has his team never played midweek before? What a tit.
