I'd agree with that. If we cannot go to Dover and get 3 ppts we will know that the system away from home will not work anywhere else if the league table is to be believed.
Gleeson wa lucky to stay on the field after that one tackle and never has been the most forward thinking player regarding passes, but the weather is a good excuse last night. All 3 wing backs did well considering this however.

Re: BBC Radio Surrey Sport for tonights match

Ward isn't really a wing back though, is he?

It's infuriating that even when we go behind, there isn't a Plan B, just square pegs in round holes.

we could very easily play a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 that drop into a defensive 4-5-1 so that we can strangle the midfield and dictate the game better away from home. That doesn't mean playing Solihoof, it just means boxing a bit cleverer. As RoJ says, for all the passing back and forth in our own half, we commit a lot of fouls because players get overwhelmed by opposition pressing and caught in possession.

A 4-3-3 of Boot, Coxe, Cameron, Gudger, Cranston, Storer, Maycock/Gleeson, Osborne/Ball, Ward/Sbarra/Donawa, Archer/Hancox, Hudlin/Rooney, would only match what we're likely to come up against in the way the opposition tends to line up, and has players used in positions that come naturally to them. Same token, we could go 4-2-3-1 with Boot, Coxe, Cameron, Gudger, Cranston, Gleeson/Maycock, Ball/Maycock, Ward/Donawa, Sbarra/Osborne/Ball, Hancox/Archer, Hudlin/Archer/Rooney. We have the players to be flexible (especially with the youngsters kicking their heels in the reserves), so there could very easily be alternatives.

The issue we face against a lot of teams, as Woodyboy picked up on on Twitter, is that coming up against teams playing a variant of 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, or 4-4-2 away from home leaves us with too many centre backs and vulnerable to overlap from the opposition's extra wide players. At the same time, as people familiar with that England game against Norway might remember, when you're playing three at the back and have a redundant number of centre backs for a lone striker, it sucks bodies out of your midfield and leaves you vulnerable to an ever-higher press. With Carter or Hancox (especially) in the back 3, we had someone who could step into midfield, make up the numbers, and drive forward with the ball. No offence intended to Williams, Cameron, or Gudger, but they don't exactly have the attributes or natural inclination to do that. It means we then have two ageing players in the centre that my brother unflatteringly describes as "crabs" (i.e. only moving sideways) being boxed in by greater midfield numbers, and ultimately a back 7 getting pressured playing football on their own 18-yard line while the three attacking players are totally isolated up the pitch.

The point is, we lack balance when we come under pressure by better teams and/or away from home where teams will look to play us more positively. We will drop more points than we gain as long as this remains the case. It's not rocket science.

I have to say I’m definitely in the ‘disappointed but not overly-fussed to be out of the competition’ camp when it comes to our performance last night. When you consider how severely disrupted the build up was, the extremely poor weather conditions and the calibre of our opponents, I think on balance we gave a pretty decent account of ourselves and the Shots manager and media contingent were quick to praise us for our important contribution to an entertaining game. I will however go on record as saying that I will most certainly not be in the ‘not overly-fussed’ camp should we be the architects of our own downfall against bottom placed Dover on Saturday. It is quite patently a must win game for both Moors and Jimmy Shan.
