"Financially important" Cup run
According to Solihull spokesman Nigel Collins, in the Sports Argus Non League News, the Mickleover Sports game was "financially important" to the club.
How can this be?
The club irresponsibly spends far more on wages and general expenses than comes in through gate money, sponsorship and other income sources, so how can income or money from a cup run be a genuine concern?
Surely the pot of money that has been propping the club (or clubs) up for several years will continue to do so. Making money from a cup run is of course a nice dent in the amount that has to be put into the club by its benefactor, but is surely not essential.
Or is it? Is this a sign that the money is going to run out?
I'm just wondering.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
I see that this news is so radical that it makes you dumbstruck Mr Sol'. Lazy journalism really. Not exactly news that football clubs around the country think the prize money in the FA Cup is quite nice. This lifeline stuff is just making some publicity for the club as £4500 (so far) is OK and may pay a bill or two but is not going to underwrite the club for long.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
Yep. it certainly did.. did I write something quite controversial, or not, but did u or a mystery moderator man moderatete it, or was there just a blip....
Really tho, I think a Cup run and an FA cup run is vital to the club, but in a promotional sort of way, we can use the publicity and get the club recognised and market it in a way not possible normally.
I would not describe as you say Roj the earning of £4,500 to be ''financially important''. It does as Frank says conjour up a financially bereft club searching for its next penny of income. Surely not the image one would hope to project.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
Do you really think a high-profile FA Cup run would benefit the club's profile?
Of course it should. But imagine this...
Moors draw Leeds United away and the game is live on Sky.
Will the club capitalise with a proactive campaign to attract and keep new fans? Will there be new and exciting merchandise on sale?
No. It will be 15 minutes of fame and by the new year perhaps 10 or 15 extra people may come to home games as a result.
It would be a fun day out and something to be proud of, but nothing more.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
Non-league teams have pretty well been defined by their FA Cup exploits in the past. But if it is just a nice day out I would settle for that.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
Of course the Mickloever game was finacially important. If we drew Leeds United away, people will point back to the Mickleover game and state that if we didnt win that game then we would not have had the chance to play Leeds.
Anyway, rather than a game at Elland Road, I would prefer a home game against a League Two side, maybe someone like Grimsby Town or Walsall.

Don't relegate Walsall yet: Os depend upon at least a point at Bescot.
Now Orient at Damson Park would be interesting for at least 2 Moors followers I know.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
I would have thought that any income from any source to be important, ergo, a cup win, or a cup run, with its attendant prize money, becomes financially important.
If a benefactor wishes to spend his own money on the club I don't see what business it is of anyone else, by dint of his input his season ticket costs a lot more than anyone else's.
Should we not bother with sponsorship or merchandise? Why bother charging admission fees? After all it's a drop in the bucket compared to the costs of running the club.
PS. I didn't moderate it away, either.

Re: "Financially important" Cup run
Sorry Roj - I was going to put Torquay United, but instead opted for a more local team.
Clive - I asked the question at the SMSA AGN regarding admission prices being reduced. The response was not good
