Moors v Redditch Report

For those of you who were lucky enough not to be in attendance:

Solihull Moors 1 - 2 Redditch United - Blue Square North

A LATE penalty from Greg Mills was not enough as Solihull Moors fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to strugglers Redditch United. The Worcestershire side took the lead and added another in three frantic first half minutes and although Mills scored with five minutes left on the clock the Reds held on.

Solihull will be glad that Derby County youngster has returned to Damson Park for six weeks and he showed a glimpse of what the Moors have missed. His early show of class clearly signalled where the Solihull danger would come from.

On 11 minutes though Solihull gifted the visitors the lead. A long ball from Liam Francis went through to Crane but unfortunately for the ‘keeper his poor kick fell straight to Jamie Sheldon who made no mistake and side footed home from 35 yards into an empty net.

While the Moors were recovering from that setback they were dealt another blow in similar fashion. Another long ball saw Indy Khela struggling, he was beaten for pace by winger Matthew Blair but Crane swept up the danger, or so he thought. His brave sliding clearance saw him collide with Blair but unfortunately for Crane his clearance went straight to the feet of Jack Byrne who fired in from 25 yards. It was unlucky for Solihull as Crane was down after the collision and had to receive treatment.

Crane was involved again in freakish fashion, his goal kick swirled back towards him in the strong wind and he had no option but to catch the ball as it returned to him. The young referee A. Fielding appeared to give a free kick much to the dismay of the crowd. A good block by Junior English meant the incident didn’t result in more embarrassment for the Moors ‘keeper.

Solihull slowly came back into the game and after good work by experienced striker Jake Edwards, Junior English had a chance to shoot from the edge of the box but the midfielder opted to pass to Mills instead but the bad angle meant he had to cross rather than shoot and the Redditch defence cleared. A direct pass found Edwards again and he flicked the ball on to his strike partner James McPike but the former Birmingham forward dragged his shot wide from 12 yards.

Edwards was holding up the ball well in a lashing rain and he gave English another chance to shoot, he took it this time but from further out he smashed his shot well wide. Mills tried to twist and turn past Redditch left-back and captain Asa Charlton but he stuck to his task and blocked the winger’s cross.

Mills again showed his class just after the restart. He curled in a free kick from 25 yards but Danny Lewis tipped his shot wide. From the resulting corner a good curling ball from Darren Campion narrowly evaded newly signed defender Jon Richardson. Lewis made another good save, after Ryan Beswick took the ball down brilliantly from a long diagonal ball from Richardson he squared for McPike but Lewis’ strong right hand kept the ball out.

Solihull enjoyed a good period of play and really should have scored at least once. Campion chipped a ball into the box, Lewis couldn’t gather after pressure from Edwards but McPike headed weakly towards goal which allowed Francis to clear the ball off the line. However after that spell Redditch had a chance to extend their lead, a good run down the left hand side by Blair allowed him to pull back to substitute Josef Jakab who saw his good shot well saved by Crane.

With five minutes left the Moors halved the deficit. After a scramble in the area, Solihull claimed for handball, after that shout was waived away they claimed for a second and the referee pointed to the spot. Mills confidently stepped up and curled it into the bottom corner out of the reach of Lewis. The Moors had enough time for one last chance which fell to Mark Gardner but his shot on the turn wasn’t quite good enough and was cleared off the line by Tom Birch.

The Reds saw out the game and the defeat means Solihull have only won once all season at Damson Park and have fell to 19th in the Blue Square North with their local rivals overtaking them. The league is still very tight though and the Moors will be looking to bounce back against second bottom Vauxhall at Damson Park this Saturday. A win, if results go Solihull’s way could put them as high as 13th.

Solihull Moors (4-4-2): Crane; Richardson, Khela, Streete, Campion; Mills, English Downes ©, Beswick (Dempster, 76 mins); Edwards (Gardner, 81 mins), McPike.

Redditch United (4-3-2-1): Lewis; Gill, Birch, Francis, Charlton ©; Sheldon, Byrne, Clarke; Blair, Ducros (Carter, 83 mins); Semper (Jakab, 62 mins).

Referee: A. Fielding

Attendance: 266

Good report Moors Hack. One point though, the free kick against Dan Crane was because he played the ball twice before being touched by another player. Correct decision by the referee.

We knew why he gave the decision but we weren't quite sure if he had given a free kick or an indirect free kick. Either way I don't think I've ever seen that happen before.

I did think the referee was a bit clueless regardless of that decision, was a bit too whistle happy and was probably too eager to impress being a young ref and all.

Indeed, it is a good report, Moors Hack. Why don't you submit this (or future match reports) for publication in the programme as we need more imput from supporters such as yourself to reflect the club better.

Well my reports are currently published on the official club website at http://www.solihullmoorsfc.co.uk

I could always ask Nigel if there is space in the programme for my reports, thanks for the feedback.

Definitely an indirect free kick as he held his arm up to indicate such, besides you can't give a direct free kick inside the area, which was where Crane's offence took place when he caught the ball. Had he caught the ball outside of his area presumably the ref would have sent him off. Now that would have been bizarre.

What a looooooooooong strange trip it's been

If caught outside the area, maybe only a yellow card instead for deliberate handball rather than a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

Thanks for pointing that one out Keith, it must have Gardner who I was thinking of.

It looked like he had the chance from where I was but there were a few bodies in the area and I was quite far away so it may well have been McPike.
