Hinckley v Moors - game off, 12.30 called by ref

http://www.hinckleyunited.com/news/10am-update-game-on.html

the dodgy areas where the sun doesn't get was covered overnight and is ok this morning. the rest is frozen on top, but 'takes a key' and is thawing nicely.

Thanks DJ, I'd advise everone to wrap up warm in those new scarves, hats, gloves, etc as the forecast is for the temperature not to rise above freezing.

Well done DJ for the updates.I know Hinckley Und.made every efford to get the the game on & lost money trying to do so.

Would the ref. have called the game off,if the pitch had been bone hard ( dust bowl conditions ) or the pitch had been soft encouraging 100 mph sliding tackles, that take the man,the ball & everything else in its path & fans & coaches shouting great tackle. No of course he wouldn't.

You can't even blame the ref.for these decisions. Its just todays culture, encouraged by Lawyers to sue anybody if they are involved in a accident. Its like if you injure yourself , lets phone Lawyers4U & blame someone else. Yes in the 60s we played on snow, ice & certainly a bit of frost, just need a bit of balance thats all.

Anyhow thanks again to Hinckley United & DJ for all their efforts.

I have to admit that when I rang at 10am and was told that not only was the pitch playable, but they weren't intending to have a pitch inspection, I was surprised, pleasantly so, in view of the weather forecast of the temperature not rising above freezing. Like Keith I too played on ice and snow in the sixties (also on concrete like dust bowls) but frozen pitches are dangerous and the ref's primary concern has to be for the safety of the players and if he felt there could be a problem, knowing that the temperature wasn't going to rise, indeed possibly fall a degree or two during the game, he made the correct decision. I believe the ref was telephoned after the pitch didn't thaw as much as expected by the groundstaff and only walked a couple of yards onto it before calling the pitch unplayable. That's not a criticism of the ref, the top layer may have been playable but if the underlying ground was still frozen solid, he had no choice.
