Re: Moors stall at Solihull Food Festival

If the club want this doing at my place of work (West Midlands Police), then I would be happy to assist.

I know Wasps Rugby in Coventry have done something very similar for emergency services and it worked a treat.

All emergency service workers should get free tickets regardless.

I'd be happy for them to get the same discount (£5) as serving military members.

Why are we giving discounts to certain people based on their jobs?

By extension of the logic of discounts for emergency services and the military, shouldn't we be extending it to all public servants?

Likewise - on a serious note - if the logic of student discounts is that students are voluntarily poor in the short-term, shouldn't a discount also be applied to the unemployed and people not earning a living wage, who are involuntarily poor?

The trouble with discounts is that they lose the club money without being fair to everyone else. Given the current economic climate, discounts for students and young people makes perfect sense. Without a discount these people would be priced out of coming. I can't help thinking that discounts specifically for the military, then extended to emergency services, are a political point rather than sensible economics from the club.

Before anyone says I hate/don't appreciate the armed forces and emergency services, my granddad was a former Solihull fire chief, whose untimely death was almost certainly connected back to the conditions he worked in during the 70s and 80s. He was also in the navy, as was my uncle. I know how tough it can be to work in those roles and make sacrifices for the good of the community. On the other hand, my other grandfather was a colonial soldier in the Gold Coast, before Ghana gained its independence, so it's not always obvious if the armed forces - by the choices of active members or not - are 'serving the community' in the way we might suppose.

Besides which, the Moors is a football club, not a pressure group. I don't see why we should be making political statements by offering certain categories of employment more worthy of a discount than others.

Agree with this. Why should a discount apply to the person who drives the ambulance, but not apply to the person who treats the patient in hospital?

Similarly, why should a serving military person get a discount on their football tickets, but not get a discount on their weekly shopping, petrol, etc?

I think discounts should be based purely in the context of "commitment" to the club, regardless of any external factors (apart from age) - e.g. season tickets, half-season tickets, or something like "pay full price for 4 matches, get £5 off the fifth match" (like getting your loyalty card stamped at your favourite coffee shop emoticon )

That is actually a very good idea.

Attend 15 home or away games in a season? Get £30 off a season ticket.

I think some are slightly missing the point.

You wouldn’t give a discount to a McDonald’s worker because the amount of people working at a specific branch is limited.

At the Police for example they have huge numbers of employees.... with very popular sports and social clubs.

I’m not saying it should be exclusive to emergency workers, but if the club wants to promote and get people through the doors then targeting big organisations and offering a sweetener would be a start, and I include Landrover in that too!

You say offering discounts costs the clubs money... does it? Even if it’s £10 instead of £15 it’s £10 the club never had originally!

I don’t agree that it should be free though..... although it would save me a lot of money! I’m all for giving the club money to watch the football we are being served up currently especially!

I totally agree with MOOR5. The concept that all military personnel are heroes, and this will no doubt attract much flak, pun intended, is complete nonsense. We have lost the plot if we regard everyone, whatever their involvement, as heroes. Personally I would have no problem with NHS workers, Police and Firefighters, excepting backroom civilian staff, being offered a discount. And like MOOR5, my relatives also served, my father was a leading stoker on aircraft carriers during the second world war, spending years in the bowels of a prime target, stripped to the waist, shovelling coal in temperatures of 40+C for shifts of 12 or more hours at a time. Other members of my family are nurses, teachers, and other public servants, few of them would consider asking for a discount.
